Winter Protection for Trees

Winters can be harsh on trees, so keep them protected for healthy growth and longevity. If you want to protect your trees from winter damage, you have come to the right place. In this blog post, explore some proven ways to keep your trees warm and safe during the cold winter months.

Wrap Trees With Burlap

Burlap can work as a barrier against cold air, frost, and windburn. It also prevents sunscald, which is when the bark heats up due to the sun and then rapidly cools when the sun sets, leading to bark cracking and damage. Wrapping your tree trunk with burlap can also protect it from gnawing animals like rabbits and deer.

Mulch Over Tree Roots

Adding mulch around your tree's roots can be an effective way to protect them from fluctuating winter temperatures. The mulch will add an insulating layer, keeping the soil warmer and preventing frost heave, which can displace the roots. Use a layer of a few inches of organic mulch, such as wood chips or shredded leaves, around the base of your tree. It is important not to pile the mulch too high around the base of the tree, as this can lead to rotting.

Water the Trees Regularly

Winter drought can cause severe damage to your trees, just like summer drought. Watering your trees thoroughly and carefully, especially during dry spells, can help them stay healthy and hydrated throughout the winter. However, avoid overwatering the trees, as this can also lead to root rot during winter.

Prune Dead Branches

Dead, weak, or diseased tree branches are more prone to break off during winter storms, causing damage to your tree or property. Prune your tree regularly during winter before the heavy snow and ice build up so that the branches won't become too heavy for your tree to support. Regular pruning also helps the tree to aggregate nutrients that are enough for the healthy parts of the tree.

Remove Snow From Trees

Snow accumulation on tree branches, particularly heavy, wet snow, can lead to broken or damaged branches. Remove snow from trees correctly to avoid causing further harm. When removing snow, gently lift the branches with a pole or broom, working your way from the bottom of the tree to the top. If the snow doesn't easily shake off, leave it as it is to avoid breaking the branch.

Ice should never be forcibly removed from trees. Instead, wait for it to melt naturally to prevent injury to the tree. Also, avoid standing directly beneath heavy, snow-laden branches to avoid injury.

Avoid Deicing Methods

Using salt and other deicing methods can cause damage to your trees. Deicing chemicals run off onto the soil, leading to soil salinity and soil poisoning, while overuse of salt can cause disfigurement, drying, and other damage to plant foliage. If you must deice, use minimal amounts, choose non-toxic alternatives, and keep them away from tree roots.

Fertilize

Fertilizing your trees before winter can help them prepare for the cold weather. Fertilizer provides your trees with the necessary nutrients and helps them produce new growth, which is essential for their survival. A balanced fertilizer applied in the fall can help your tree store nutrients to survive through the winter.

Taking care of your trees during winter is essential for their health. Utilizing the tips shared above will go a long way in protecting your trees during winter. Remember to pay close attention to your tree's needs to keep them healthy and happy during the winter season. By following these steps, you'll ensure that your trees will thrive not only through the cold winter months but also year-round.
